How Long Does It Take To Get A Michigan Nursing License?

Permanent License

Approximately 4-6 weeks upon receipt of all required materials.

MI License Renewal

  • Renewal cadence: 2 years from the date of issue. You will be mailed and emailed a renewal notification postcard to your mailing and email addresses on record approximately 90 business days prior to the expiration date of your license. 

  • Renewal fee: $131.00

  • Required contact hours: 25 hours of continuing education within the 2-year period preceding the date of renewal.
    - At least 2 of these hours must be in pain and pain symptom management.
    - No more than 12 credit hours may be earned during a 24-hour period.

  • There is a 60-day grace period to renew your license after it expires, but you will be charged a $20.00 late fee.

MI Licensure by Endorsement

Permanent License

  1. Submit an application online and pay the fee. The process is the same for RNs and LPNs. View the online licensure checklist here. 

  2. Provide a background check with fingerprints. Once the online application is completed and submitted, you will be emailed an Application Confirmation letter containing instructions to complete the Criminal Background Check (except for those applicants seeking reinstatement if the license expired within the last three years).

  3. Provide a valid SSN, or fill out the Social Security Affidavit Form. 

  4. Answer questions pertaining to Good Moral Character and provide documentation of any prior criminal convictions.

  5. Affirm that you have completed Implicit Bias Training and Human Trafficking Training.

  6. Request verification of all previous nursing licensures via Nursys or to be sent directly from your original state of licensure to the Michigan BON.

  7. Request official transcripts from your school verifying you have met the educational requirements of a nursing program to be sent directly to the Michigan BON. Transcripts can be emailed to bpldata@michigan.gov or mailed to:

  1. Passing NCLEX-RN Examination Scores- Score reports will be received directly from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN)
